The California Energy Commission announced today that every new build could be required to install solar panels by 2020. The rules will apply to permits that are pulled after January 1, 2020.
There is much discussion that this could have a negative effect on the housing crisis in California, as the affordability in California is already through the roof.
I disagree that this will have a negative effect, as in many instances, the payback period for your solar energy system could be as little as 5 years. After the payback period, you get to enjoy free energy for the life of the system. Over the past several years the cost to go solar has decreased dramatically which makes it even more affordable, and will likely continue to do so.
